Although the Lady Cougars failed to advance out of pool play Saturday at the Herington Invitational volleyball meet, they did come away with a solid victory.

After losing to Wichita Sunrise Academy, 20-25 and 19-25, and Hope, 21-15 and 19-25, they defeated White City in two games, 25-19 and 25-14.

In that final match, the girls were on their game all the way, much to the delight of Coach Yvonne Burhoop, who has seen her team take big leads time and time again, only to fall behind in the final minutes.

Centre led all the way in both games. Everyone seemed to play in sync, doing what they were trained to do.

Leann Pankratz and Kylie Burhoop provided excellent front line play, combining for 31 spikes and 15 kills. Passing was good, and setters Samantha Alvarez and Amy Hajek did their job.

Josie Peterson served for the final three points in the first game, and Bridgette Burns served for seven straight points in the second game.

Letting their voices be heard, a group of Centre boys led by Bryant Brunner kept up a steady drumbeat of support during the match.

Afterward, the coach high-fived them saying, "Hey, you guys! Nice job!"

"I really appreciate those guys," she said later. "Whenever they're around they give us a lot of support. It doesn't matter if we are winning or losing, they are there to cheer us on."

The team's overall record after Saturday's tournament was 8-10.

They were slated to play an excellent Wichita Sunrise Academy team Tuesday on the road.
