Centre girls squeak by Sunrise Academy, 29-28 years ago

Improved scoring in the second half allowed Centre girls' basketball team to bring home a 29-28 win Friday from a game played at Sunrise Academy in Wichita.

The low-scoring contest found Centre behind 10-13 at halftime, but 7-4 and 12-11 scoring advantages in the final two quarters gave them the one-point edge.

Centre completed 11-of-50 field goal attempts, including three three-point goals, compared to 12-of-47 by Sunrise, including one three-point goal.

Selena Seifert knocked in two three-pointers and two other goals to score in double digits, with 10 points. Teaira Turner scored nine including one three-point goal and two free throws.

Alyssa Luna was leading rebounder with 11, followed by Megan Gutsch with nine. Turner provided three assists and four steals.

In a game played at home Jan. 3, Centre girls defeated Wichita Homeschool, 46-31.

It wasn't much of a contest, as the Lady Cougars jumped to a 15-6 lead in the first quarter and led 29-12 at halftime.

They got careless in the second half and were outscored 9-8, and 10-9 in the final two quarters. However, the big first half lead gave them an easy 15-point win.

Centre shot 30 percent from the field and 42 percent from the free-throw line. Wichita Homeschool turned the ball over 39 times compared to 25 by Centre.

Alyssa Luna had an outstanding game. She scored 16 points and had seven rebounds, two blocked shots, and six steals.

Selena Seifert also was in double digits with 10 points. Krista Heiser had six rebounds. Teaira Turner provided four assists and nine steals, and Jackie Klenda four assists and four steals.

The junior varsity defeated Wichita Homeschool, 31-28. They were down 20-9 at halftime, but a strong 16-2 scoring advantage in the third quarter gave them a three-point lead they maintained through the fourth quarter to win the game.

Bridgette Burns led scoring with eight points, followed by Brooke Carlson with seven.

Other scorers were Jessica Deines and Kylie Burhoop, four each, Samantha Alvarez and Leann Pankratz, three each, and Kristine Jirak, two.
