The 1A Centre High School girls' basketball team faced two major obstacles to winning their first game of the 2006-07 season.

First of all, they were playing a 3A school, Southeast of Saline. Secondly, they were playing on the road.

But they gave it their all, and when the seesaw game was finished, they were on top by three points, 58-55.

The win was especially sweet for first-year coach, Kelly Steiner.

"The girls played really hard and did a good job," he said.

SES jumped out to a 14-11 lead in the first quarter, and was outscored 12-11 in the second to lead by two at halftime, 24-22.

Megan Gutsch completed four field goals and two free throws in the third quarter to lead Centre in a 13-8 scoring advantage, putting the Lady Cougars up by one, 35-34.

Both teams fought hard in the fourth quarter, but Centre scored two more points than SES, 23-21, including 10 from the free-throw line, to garner the three-point win.

Selena Seifert, Teaira Turner, and Kylie Burhoop each completed a three-point shot, and three players finished in double digits.

Gutsch led scoring with 15 points, followed by Burhoop with 12, and Turner with 10. Brittany Owens added eight and Alyssa Luna four.

The varsity is playing this week in a pre-season tournament at Herington.
