Centre girls win one at Marion tourney

Centre High School volleyball team won one match and lost two Saturday at the Marion Invitational, failing to advance out of pool play.

They started out with a victory against De Soto, a 4A school. The hard-fought victory was earned in three close games, 25-22, 22-25, and 25-23. Bridgette Burns served for eight straight points in game three.

The Lady Cougars won the first game in the second match, stunning Halstead, 25-12. Amy Hajek served for eight straight points. After trailing in the second game, the team rallied for a 20-20 tie before losing 25-21.

The third was a repeat, as the Lady Cougars struggled from behind. Josie Peterson served for eight consecutive points to bring them within one, 17-16. After a 20-20 tie, Halstead went on to win, 25-22.

The third match was with Canton-Galva. It seemed the spirit and drive had gone out of the Lady Cougars. They trailed all the way in two losing games, 25-13 and 25-14.

Samantha Alvarez was leading scorer for the tournament, serving for 16 points, including seven aces.

Leann Pankratz and Kylie Burhoop led at the net in spikes and kills.

The team's record stood at 5-8 overall at the end of the tournament. They played in a triangular Tuesday at Flint Hills Christian, Manhattan.
