Centre girls win one, lose two

Centre High School volleyball team got off to a good start Aug. 31 by winning two of three games in its match with Canton-Galva at a quad hosted by Inman.
"Jackie Klenda and Brianne Stahlecker combined for some good plays and the girls exhibited a lot of hustle," said Coach Yvonne Burhoop. "I was pleased with our first night. We played well."
A change in the rules requires all games to go to at least 25 points, whereas formerly the third game was played to 15.
The Lady Cougars lost the first game 8-25 but rallied in the second to win 25-16. The third game proved to be a zinger, requiring everyone's best effort. In the end, Centre won 30-28.
After that supreme effort, the girls were played out, Burhoop said, but played "OK" in the succeeding match with Inman. They lost in two games with identical scores of 12-25.
The two games with Elyria were close, but the girls didn't hit as well, Burhoop said. They lost, 22-25 and 23-25.
The junior varsity also played three matches, giving them good experience even though they were defeated in all three.
"They maybe played more than they will the rest of the year," Burhoop said.
