Centre girls win two games

Centre High School girls played two games away during the past week. They defeated Elyria Christian Thursday, 32-31, in a non-league game, and Solomon Saturday, 55-33.

Except for a 4-4 tie at the end of the first quarter, Elyria led until the final quarter, when they were outscored 14-11 by the Lady Cougars.

Alyssa Luna was leading scorer with eight points, six of them in the final quarter.

At Solomon, Jackie Klenda was leading scorer with 16 points, followed by Megan Gutsch, 13.

The girls jumped to a 10-2 lead in the first quarter and led at halftime, 23-13. They scored 20 points in the third quarter to increase their lead to 43-24. A 12-9 fourth quarter resulted in a 22-point win.

Gutsch rebounded the ball 11 times, followed by Krista Heiser with seven. Jill Fenske provided six assists and stole the ball seven times. Selena Seifert had four assists and three steals.

The team is 3-1 in regular season play.

The junior varsity defeated Solomon 35-8. Kylie Burhoop led with six points. Julie Rziha added five; Dani Hatfield, Amy Hajek, and Samantha Alvarez four each; Kelsey Hatfield three; Gloria Belton, Jessica Deines, Chelsey Tajchman, and Nellie Hill two each; and Justine Jennings one.

Boys defeat Elyria

In a makeup game Thursday, Centre High School Cougars defeated Elyria Christian, 53-41, to bring their regular season record to 3-1.

The Cougars pulled out to a three-point lead, 14-11, at the end of the first quarter, and continued to increase their lead throughout the game.

They outscored Elyria 9-6, 14-11, and 16-13, in the final three quarters to win by 12 points.

Justin Garrard led scoring with 14 points. Dustin Burnett and Seth Jirak contributed two three-point goals each. Burnett scored 12 points and Jirak scored 10.

Jirak led at the boards with nine rebounds, followed by Garrard with seven.
