Centre Junior High girls make it to the top

After defeating Solomon Thursday and Luckey Saturday at Hope, the Centre Junior High School girls' basketball team are 2006 champions of the Tri-County League.

Both contests were excitingly close and came down to the final minutes of play to determine the winner.

Centre defeated Solomon 20-17 in overtime. The score was tied at 10-all at the end of the third quarter and tied again at 14-all as the final horn sounded.

Josie Peterson led the Lady Cougars to victory in overtime with one two-point shot and one three-point shot. Savik Howard added a point at the free-throw line. Solomon scored three points, resulting in a three-point win for Centre.

Peterson led scoring for the game with nine points. Howard and Allison Shields scored three points each and Dallas Rosenow and Carlye Simons added two each.

Playing to a packed house, the Lady Cougars defeated Luckey in the championship game, 26-24, in an up-and-down contest. After a 4-6 point first quarter, they led 16-12 at halftime, and fell behind 20-22 at the end of the third quarter.

Howard made three baskets in the final quarter to give Centre six more points compared to just two by Luckey, resulting in an exciting two-point victory for the Lady Cougars.

Howard and Shelby Deines scored eight points each. Simons added four, and Rosenow, Shields, and Peterson two each.

The team ended the season with 10 wins and two losses in league play and a record of 12-3 overall.
