Centre schools raise money for ADA research

Students and teachers in Centre USD #397 participated Oct. 27 in a Walk for Diabetes to raise funds for American Diabetes Association (ADA). At least $2,332 was collected.

A sixth grade student, Megan Chizek, was diagnosed with diabetes at least eight years ago. She checks her blood sugar level four times a day. When it is high, she gives herself an injection of insulin. When it is low, she eats something sweet or with protein and is careful not to exert herself.

Chizek said she can recognize when her blood sugar level is high because she gets very thirsty and feels weak. When it is low, she feels shaky and confused.

She said ADA is seeking a cure and also is working to develop an easier method of delivering insulin, such as an enhaler.

Every year, Chizek goes to a special camp for children with diabetes. She learns about new developments and sometimes gets new monitoring equipment.

"It helps a lot," she said.

Chizek is the daughter of Galen and Tammy Chizek of Lincolnville.
