At least 24 students from Centre School District and 29 adults from the area visited Washington, D.C., and New York City during spring break.

"We did everything," said co-sponsor Nancy Brockmeier. Jean Brunner also was a sponsor.

Among the sights they took in were various memorials, Ford's theater, the Smithsonian, Capitol, Statue of Liberty, and Ellis Island.

"We went from 7:30 or 8 a.m. until 11 at night every day," Brockmeier said. "It was a great learning experience."

The group returned home late Friday evening, leaving their head sponsor and his wife behind.

Unfortunately, Bud Peterson fell seriously ill upon the group's arrival the morning of March 21 in Washington, D.C.

He spent the week in a hospital, where he underwent surgery Saturday. According to his mother, Mary Deane Peterson of Burdick, he remained in intensive care Monday but doctors expect a full recovery.

Bud's wife, Maureen, has been by his side throughout the ordeal. Mary Deane said Maureen attended an Easter service in the hospital chapel early Sunday morning. She also received support in phone conversations with relatives back home.

"That's what got her through," Mary Deane said.

Other relatives and acquaintances living in the area have called at the hospital, praying with Maureen and providing lodging.

"We'll have to wait and see whether or not Bud can go back to teaching this year," Mary Deane added. "The important thing is that he is all right."

Peterson was scheduled to begin a driver's education class this week. According to Superintendent Bob Kiblinger, a certified driver's education instructor has been hired to fill in for Peterson until his return.
