Centre track teams place third in first meet of the season

Centre High School hosted an invitational track meet April 4 at Marion. Centre girls finished in third place with 63 points. The boys' team also finished third with 37 points.

Other participating teams were: Marion, first, 118 points; Moundridge, second, 82 points, and Goessel, fourth, 56 points.

Senior Jackie Klenda topped the pole vault with a height of eight feet, one inch. She also placed first in the 400-meter dash with a time of one minute, 8.13 seconds.

Brittany Owens placed second in the 3200m run with a time of 16:55.

Kylie Burhoop and Alisha Barney finished second and third in high jump with identical jumps of 4-6.

Barney also finished second in the long jump at 13-6. Krista Heiser took second place in the 300-meter low hurdles at 55.09.

Among the boys, James Weber and Jeremy Kristek finished first and second in high jump, both scaling the bar at 5-6.

Dustin Burnett placed first in the 400m dash with a time of 55.29. He placed second in the 800m run at 2:19.86.

Centre teams had a tough time Friday at the Marion track meet, where they were competing with 10 3A and 4A schools.

The only boys to score points were Jirak, who placed sixth in shot put at 43-9 1/2, and Kristek, who placed fifth with a 9-6 jump in pole vault. The boys' team finished in 11th place with 11 points.

Klenda placed sixth in the 400m dash with a time of 1:13.37, to earn two points for the girls' team. They finished in 10th place (because of a tie for ninth place).
