CES playground gets a facelift

Centre Elementary School playground in Lost Springs has been brightened recently by two large paintings on the blacktop.

A friendship circle helps students solve conflicts peacefully. It allows students to engage in a mediation process to find a solution to common playground altercations.

Painted by Sharon Matz, the concentric circles represent steps along the way. First is a call for getting the facts, then managing anger, engaging in caring communications, and using timely tools. At the very center, the two students shake hands and are friends.

Not far from friendship circle is a large painting of a map of the United States, with each state delineated through the use of different colors. Hawaii and Alaska also are painted in their respective locations.

Mothers and children worked together under Matz's direction to create the map. They were: Anita, Abigail, and Cody Svoboda; Rachael, Tony, and Bryce Naerebout; Cheri and Tyler Bentz; Carla and Nathaniel Engler; Renee and Adam Makovec; and Matz and her son Jacob.
