CES students win first place prizes for artwork

Winners have been announced in the 2008 Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve Arts and Education Contest sponsored by the Kansas Park Trust and Farmers and Drovers Bank.

The art contest was based on the theme, "Springtime on the Prairie."

Greg Oborny of Centre Elementary School won first place in the first-third grade category, and CES student Tyler Bentz also won first place in the fourth-fifth grade category.

In the essay contest based on the theme, "Understanding Our Prairie Ecosystem," Kassady Griffin of Chase County Elementary School won first place in the first-third grade category.

Winners will receive a Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve T-shirt; a certificate of recognition signed by Mike Hayden, former Kansas governor and current chairman of the Kansas Park Trust; a $50 savings bond from Farmers and Drovers Bank; and a free guided tour of the preserve for their entire class.

Each winning student's teacher will receive a free book on the preserve for their classroom.

Oborny, a third grader, is the son of David and Sandra Oborny, Pilsen. Bentz, a fourth grader, is the son of Sheri Bentz of Tampa. Paul and Kathy Swan of Marion are Griffin's grandparents.
