Chingawassa Days festival declared The Year of Gene

Organizers of Chingawassa Days have declared 2008 "The Year of Gene," in honor of Gene Winkler, who retired from the committee following the 2007 festival.

Winkler served on the committee for 10 years, including terms as chairman and co-chairman.

He is well-known in the Marion community for his involvement and leadership.

"Everyone knows Gene," said a spokesman for the committee. "There are many in the community who give their time and effort for the good of all, but Gene is in a class by himself."

Winkler's list of activities is impressive. He is a city council member. He is a volunteer for EMS, is an officer in Marion Kiwanis Club and Marion Country Club, and co-chairs Marion Advancement Campaign. He films and broadcasts MHS games on Channel 22, is an Old Settlers' Day volunteer, is active in Marion Chamber of Commerce, and served on St. Luke Hospital board of directors.

"If you want something done in Marion, a good place to start is with Gene Winkler," said the Chingawassa committee.

To honor Winkler and acknowledge the sacrifices he and his family have made, the 2008 Chingawassa button design includes Gene's picture. He and his family will be recognized during the Friday evening festivities at Chingawassa Days.

The public is invited to attend and help celebrate "The Year of Gene."
