LETTERS:   Chingawassa volunteers appreciated years ago

To the Editor:

I am writing in response to the cowardly individual who complained about Chingawassa Days but refused to sign their name. I assume you are one of those people who complain about everything in Marion, but never volunteer.

You obviously have no idea the countless hours the Chingawassa Days steering committee puts into this event. The steering committee is 100 percent volunteer labor — they don't get paid for this. They don't get reimbursed for the time and effort they impart.

They can only hope the community can see the value of their efforts and reap the rewards of their months of hard work. It is not something they throw together in a few weeks.

They work on it for about nine months — some might say the work never ends.

During that weekend and the week before, the steering committee puts in endless hours in preparation. They literally invest 100 percent of their time, energy, and effort to this event.

My dad has been on this committee since its inception. He is a pillar of this community and has volunteered for various activities throughout his life. It amazes me that anyone can look at him, or any of the other volunteers in this community, and criticize them for anything.

Chingawassa Days would NOT happen without them!

I am disappointed in the negativity in this town and the negativity created by the Your Turn column.

If people aren't willing to sign their names (because they might be asked to volunteer their time, money, or energy to the cause for which they complain), they shouldn't be heard.

I commend the Chingawassa committee for 11 years of excellent, under-appreciated work. I praise them for the tolerance and perseverance it takes to see their efforts through to completion. I admire them for the strength and commitment. And I pity those who are too selfish to see the overall good.

Thanks, Chingawassa steering committee — your efforts are greatly appreciated.
