Christmas Collections: Snow Babies brighten life for Betty Sanders

Betty Sanders' daughter, Christine, was a KU student at Lawrence in 1990 when she bought her mother her first Snow Baby as a Christmas present.

That was the beginning of a collection which has grown to approximately 130, all contained in a corner curio cabinet in her home at 607 S. Lincoln in Marion.

"I have bought a few but most of them are gifts," Betty said.

At first, Snow Babies were all white, but the later ones include color. The newest ones contain gold-colored features.

The figurines are named and dated. Many of them have specific themes such as "Little Liberty," a Statue of Liberty replica, and "God Bless America," a little boy holding a flag.

One shelf of Betty's curio cabinet is filled with sports figures. She also has four music boxes with moving parts.

Betty's regular Snow Babies are three to four inches high. Others from Avon are half-size.

Betty also has a few Snow Bunnies, figurines which are popular at Easter time.

She is a member of a Snow Babies Club.

Come January, Betty plans to bring out a collection of snowmen to decorate her house, but that is a story for another time.
