CHS drops two games

It was another bad week for the Centre Cougars this past week, as the boys added two to the loss column.

In a makeup game Feb. 4 at White City, they were defeated 66-51.

It appeared that after being defeated twice before by Centre, the Huskies were determined to reverse the trend.

They came out strong and quick, challenging the Cougars during every possession. After many intercepted passes for quick scores, White City led 24-14 in the second quarter. But a layup and free throw by Trevor Troutt narrowed the gap to seven, 25-18, at halftime.

A win wasn't out of reach, but in the second half the team's defense and offense seemed to fall apart, as White City surged to a 53-36 third quarter lead. The Cougars were outscored 28-18.

They held their own in the fourth quarter but walked away with a 15-point loss.

Troutt led the Cougars with 14 points and nine rebounds. Others who scored in double digits were Ben Krause 12, and Zach Slayden 11.

Centre vs. Olpe

In a non-league game Friday on the road, Olpe defeated Centre, 77-44.

The Cougars completed just 16 of 44 field goal attempts and four of 12 three-point attempts, but they completed 100 percent of eight free-throw attempts.

They trailed 40-26 at halftime, and a disastrous 29-9 third quarter deficit led to the eventual 33-point loss.

Bryant Brunner scored 12 points and provided four assists. Troutt scored 12 points and had eight rebounds. Krause provided three steals and Tanner Brunner took a charge.

The regional tournament will be played at Goessel next week. Brackets were not available at press time because final league games were played Tuesday.
