CHS girls finish second at tournament

Arch-rival Hope put a chink in the Centre girls' undefeated basketball record by defeating them Friday, 65-57.

The Lady Cougars defeated Herington, 56-44, Dec. 5, and Northern Heights, 59-33, Saturday, to end the tournament in second place with two wins and one loss.

Centre vs. Herington

In the opening round against Herington, the Lady Cougars got off to a 7-1 lead, but Herington went on an 11-point scoring spree to take a 12-7 lead. Herington lead by three at the end of the quarter.

Two free throws by Megan Gutsch and a field goal by Kylie Burhoop early in the second quarter put the Lady Cougars back on top.

They fell behind again but a three-point goal by Selena Seifert restored the lead.

The Lady Railers kept pressing back and took the lead again before the end of the half. A free throw by Brittany Owens gave Centre a one-point lead, 26-25.

The second half belonged to the Lady Cougars. They led by 15 points several times late in the fourth quarter and finished ahead by 12 points.

Centre vs. Hope

After an opening two-point salvo by Alyssa Luna, the Lady Cougars fell behind 2-9 in the first quarter against Hope.

But a three-pointer by Seifert, a free throw by Teaira Turner, and field goals by Samantha Alvarez and Burhoop closed the gap to two.

Sloppy playing by Centre and deadly free-throw shooting by Hope in the second quarter gave the Lady Lions a 35-23 lead at halftime.

Centre struggled to close the gap in the third quarter but remained behind, 35-48.

A field goal and free throw by Turner closed the gap to 10. The Lady Cougars continued to play aggressively and came within two, 57-59, with less than two minutes to play. But Hope scored six free throws to finish the game in the lead by eight points.

Centre vs. Northern Heights

The game against Northern Heights was no contest. Centre led 19-5 at the end of the first quarter, and the team built its lead from there.

The Lady Cougars won by 26 points.
