Results were mixed for the Centre High School girls' varsity during the past week. They won a game Tuesday with Solomon, 51-34, and lost Friday to Hope, 58-47. Both games were played at home.

The Lady Cougars took the lead early over Solomon and built on it as the game progressed.

In the last minute and a half of the first quarter, Selena Seifert scored two three-point goals and Brianne Stahlecker stole the ball for a layup, resulting in a 19-4 Centre lead.

They scored just seven points in the second quarter but were ahead 26-10 at halftime.

After adding just six points in the third quarter, the team added 17 points in the final quarter. Solomon also scored 17 points.

Jill Fenske and Megan Gutsch each stole the ball for a layup and Krista scored a field goal and free throw, making the score 39-21.

Seifert and Stahlecker scored from three-point range and Teaira Turner made a basket to put Centre up, 49-29. A last-second shot by Jenna Beneke gave Centre the 51-34 win.

The junior varsity was defeated, 38-34. They were behind 16-8 at the end of the first quarter and were unable to catch up despite a 6-3 and 14-9 scoring advantage in the second and third quarters.

Chelsey Tajchman and Samantha Alvarez scored three baskets each in the third quarter, and Tajchman scored all of Centre's six points in the fourth quarter.

Tajchman was leading scorer with 16 points and had six rebounds along with Kylie Burhoop and Brooke Carlson.

Hope

The varsity had trouble scoring against Hope in Friday's game. The Lady Lions' rebounding was impressive as they put the ball through the hoop again and again. Centre trailed, 6-16, at the end of the first quarter.

The second quarter began with five unanswered points by Centre. Gutsch stole the ball three consecutive times and made a basket and free throw to bring the Lady Cougars within five.

The Lady Lions came back with eight unanswered points to extend their lead to 13. Two points by Fenske and five by Alyssa Luna resulted in a halftime score of 27-18, keeping a win within reach.

They weren't able to close the gap in the third quarter, and ended it down 12 points.

During the fourth quarter, Hope pulled farther away and scored 12 points from the free-throw line. Centre was behind by as much as 17 points when Klenda, Turner, and Shaina Makovec each completed a three-pointer in a desperate attempt for a comeback. But it was too little, too late, and Hope took home an 11-point win.

The junior varsity was defeated, 27-22. The game was played in three quarters.

Centre led 10-6 at the end of the first quarter, and the game was tied at 18-all at the end of the second quarter.

A dismal final quarter in which Hope outscored Centre 13-4 led to the Lady Cougars' five-point loss.
