CHS graduates learn additional three Rs

Burdick cattleman Galen "Pete" Peterson was guest speaker Sunday at Centre High School commencement exercises. He is a 1962 graduate of the school.

Peterson said respect, reliability, and responsibility are as important as reading, writing, and 'rithmetic.

"If you respect others, they will respect you, and you will, in turn, respect yourself," he told the 19 seniors. "Be reliable. Do what you say you will do."

He said respect and reliability lead to responsibility.

"Being responsible means there are consequences for your decisions," he noted.

In addition to a processional and recessional by the high school band, a choral group sang an "Old Irish Blessing," by Denes Agay.

Superintendent Demitry Evancho presented the class of 2004.

"This event affords students the opportunity to linger longer on that stepping stone," he said.

Thirteen of the 19 graduates received academic trophies. They were: Rebecca Brooks, Andrea Carlson, Brent Carlson, Joseph Forsberg, Raschelle Jirak, Amanda Kleiber, Laura Klenda, Irina Komarnitskaya, Trichia Pauls, Ashley Perkins, Nichole Ryff, Todd Stahlecker, and Stacy Terwilliger.

After the presentation of diplomas and awards, the graduates formed a line outside the building to be congratulated by friends and relatives.

Superintendent Evancho and Principal Neal Weltha presided over their final commencement exercises as administrators for Centre USD #397. Evancho has taken a part-time position at Southern Cloud school district, and Weltha is moving on to Bluestem school district at Leon.

Another class also is moving on. Seventeen of the graduates plan to attend college or vocational school, one plans to join the Army Reserve, and one plans to get a job.
