CHS loses opening game to 3A school

Centre High School boys' 1A basketball team traveled Friday to 3A Southeast of Saline for a pre-season contest.

According to assistant coach Marc Grout, poor shooting on the part of the Cougars led to their defeat, 56-34.

Southeast took a 14-6 first-quarter lead and was ahead 32-18 at halftime. Centre outscored Southeast 12-9 in the third quarter but added only four points compared to Southeast's 15 in the fourth, to give Southeast a 22-point win.

Centre's scoring was distributed among six players. No one scored in double digits. High-point man was Seth Jirak with eight.

Centre completed 14 two-point goals and one three-pointer compared to 17 two-point and four three-point goals by Southeast.

Southeast went to the free throw line 13 times for 10 points compared to Centre's six times for three points.

The boys are playing this week in a pre-season tournament at Herington. They played Herington Tuesday, and will play Hope at 5:30 p.m. Friday and Northern Heights at 5:30 p.m. Saturday.

The junior varsity also was defeated, 52-36. They led 10-9 at the end of the first quarter, but things went downhill from there.

Southeast was ahead by six points, 23-17, at halftime. They scored 29 points in the second half compared to 19 by Centre to win the game handily.

Kevin Mueller led Centre in scoring with 10 points. Alfonse Klenda added seven points, and Phillip Griffith six.
