Two Centre High School seniors, Seth Jirak and Alisha Barney, will be competing this weekend in the state track meet in Wichita.

Jirak qualified by placing first in discus and second in shot put Friday in the 1A regional meet at Madison. Barney finished third in pole vault.

The top four in each event qualified for state competition.

Jirak's discus throw of 150 feet, 6.5 inches was short of his record 159-5 set during the regular season but more than 11 feet farther than the nearest competitor.

His 48-1.25 throw in shot put was 1.25 feet farther than his best during the regular season.

Barney was not able to participate in many track meets during the regular season, but her best jump of 7-6 in pole vault at the regional was one-half foot higher than her previous best. She was one of four girls who competed in that event.

Jirak medaled at the 2006 state meet by placing seventh in discus at 143-6. Barney placed 11th in pole vault.

Jirak will throw the shot put at 8 a.m. and the discus at 11:30 a.m. Friday. Barney will compete at 11:30 a.m. Friday.

Nellie Hill in girls' discus, Brittany Owens in girls' javelin, and Alfonse Klenda in boys' discus and javelin just missed qualifying for state, finishing in fifth place in each event.

Others who placed in the top 10 in their events were Kylie Burhoop and Carlye Simons.

The boys' team finished ninth of 18. The girls' team finished 14th of 20.
