Centre volleyball team had high hopes for going on to substate competition when they entered regional play Oct. 18 at Burlingame. Those hopes were dashed when they fell to archrival Hope in semi-finals play.

The Lady Cougars entered the tournament as second seed. Hope was seeded third.

Their first match was with St. Xavier of Junction City, a team they defeated handily, 25-6 and 25-4.

Before the tournament, Centre had defeated Hope three times and had been defeated by Hope two times.

It seemed that Hope was determined to even the score. They won in two games, 25-19 and 25-22.

In the first game, Centre started out slow but caught up and tied the game numerous times. The Lady Cougars went ahead, 15-14, before the Lady Lions took the lead for good.

The second game was a different story, as Centre took an early lead. The Lady Cougars led 17-7 when they appeared to lose their focus. Hope scored the next 10 points to tie the game at 17-all.

The two teams were neck-and-neck from then on until the final minutes of the game when Hope surged ahead to win by three points, 25-22.

Coach Yvonne Burhoop wasn't happy with the way her team played. They played "not to lose" instead of "to win," she said. "The sets weren't where they needed to be, and the girls were tense instead of enjoying the game. In the second game, we came out with momentum and quit at 17."

The tournament was won by White City, which defeated Hope in the championship game. Both teams will go on to sub-state.

Centre ended the season with a record of 18-11.

Burhoop said she was somewhat disappointed in the season.

"If we would have played more consistent, I would be happier," she said. "On the other hand, a lot of teams would have been happy with an 18-11 record, but I wanted a little more."

Burhoop already has her sights set on next year. With only one senior on the team, they will be coming back with a lot of experience. Burhoop said she has seen marked improvement in several freshmen and is expecting several good players to come up from eighth grade to enhance the team.
