CHS volleyball takes fourth

It wasn't the best of weeks this past week for the Centre High School volleyball team. After finishing 1-1 Sept. 19 at a triangular at White City, they finished 2-3 Saturday at the Herington invitational tournament. Their record now is 12-7.

The Lady Cougars did advance out of pool play after defeating Herington and Sunrise Academy of Wichita and losing to White City.

They were defeated by Sacred Heart, then by Hope to take fourth place.

The girls got off to a slow start in the first game against Herington. It seemed they were not yet awake, as numerous serves went into the net. But good spiking by Alyssa Luna and Alisha Barney helped them to come out on top in two games, 27-25 and 25-16.

The Lady Cougars lost the first game against White City, 17-25, but won the second, 25-16.

The third game proved to be the most competitive as both teams tied numerous times. The girls were fired up and played hard. They were perfect in serving, almost perfect in setting, and prolific in delivering spikes.

That call could have made a difference in the outcome of the game, as well as the tournament, as Centre lost by two points, 25-27, to lose the match, 1-2.

The contest with Sunrise Academy was another three-game match. Centre lost the first, 19-25, and won the next two, 25-18 and 25-15.

The Lady Cougars clearly were outranked by an astonishing Sacred Heart team. The tall, talented team delivered numerous unanswered strong spikes. The digs that did occur tended to send the ball every which way.

The girls lost in two games, 4-25 and 10-25, and went on to play Hope for third place. They were defeated in two games, 23-25 and 20-25.

Coach Yvonne Burhoop said the team's loss to White City after a hard-fought match took away their momentum.

"We were all frustrated at our lack of consistency, as well as the bad call by the official," she said. "Selena (Seifert) had a good day and Teaira (Turner) played well at times. Kylie (Burhoop) usually is a good server and she missed four."

"Our losses weren't any one person's fault," she said. "There were enough players off at the same time to make a difference in the outcome."
