City approves C&D landfill years ago

A construction and demolition landfill will be allowed within Marion city limits.
Marion City Council gave the OK Monday afternoon to Rocky Hett to operate the C&D landfill on his property near Martin Marietta rock quarry.
The approval was given after Marion Planning Commission reviewed the application and recommended it be approved with one condition — that no city services will be provided at the site.
Planning commission chairman Roger Schwab reported that Kansas Department of Health and Environment has been contacted and Marion County will need to include the site in its solid waste plan.
Schwab said the planning commission gave the nod because a C&D landfill is considered safe with no ground water pollution issues and no burning.
The county has supported this type of landfill to reduce the amount of solid waste going through the county's transfer station and ultimately being hauled to the solid waste landfill.
Items that will be allowed at the site include untreated wood products, glass, shingles, nails, and appliances without coolants.
At this time, Hett will operate the facility but had indicated to the planning commission that he would like the city or county manage the facility.
The landfill will be located a mile east of Timber Road, off U.S.-56.
