The City of Marion recently was notified that it had been chosen to receive a $400,000 Community Development Block Grant.

City officials had asked and received cooperation from city residents in completing an income survey as part of the grant application process. The survey had to reveal that at least 51 percent of Marion residents were low to moderate income, which it did.

The grant funds, with a loan of $644,480 from Kansas Department of Transportation, will be used to make much-needed improvements to Eisenhower Drive and North Cedar Street, two streets that connect to K-256.

Marion was among 11 Kansas communities and counties to share nearly $2.9 million in community improvement grant funds through the federally-funded program that is administered through Kansas Department of Commerce.

The maximum amount awarded through this grant program is $400,000 for any single project.

Grant funds are designed for development and infrastructure needs.
