City council tables decision to reappoint personnel

Staff reporter

New mayor Mary Olson was sworn in Monday evening at the Marion City Council meeting with more than 30 people witnessing the event in the cramped council room.

Olson took the reins of the council and at the end of the meeting, made it clear she was not ready to approve a blanket appointment of city positions.

An agenda item was the appointments of David Mayfield as city administrator, Angela Lange as city clerk, Becky Makovec as assistant city clerk and treasurer, Michel Soyez as chief of police, Mike Regnier as fire chief, Dan Baldwin as attorney, and Bryson Mills as municipal judge. Typically the annual appointments are made in April.

When it was time to make those appointments, Olson asked the council to move that item to later in the meeting and after an executive session.

Later in the meeting, Olson called for a 15-minute executive session to discuss personnel with only the council in attendance.

When the meeting reconvened, Olson said she wasn't prepared to make the appointments. Councilman Bill Holdeman made a motion to table the decision for two weeks (which is when the council meets again); councilman Stacey Collett seconded the motion, and it passed, 5-0.

Later in the meeting, Holdeman asked city administrator David Mayfield for a copy of his contract. Mayfield responded that he didn't have a contract like city economic development director Jami Williams but had an employee contract.
