Staff reporter

Marion City Commission approved a silver sponsorship of Marion County Relay for Life by donating $200 to the event.

David Mayfield, city administrator, reported that Harvey Sanders, public utilities superintendent, obtained bids for improvements at Marion Museum.

Improvements include air conditioning and heating units and installation, insulation, electrical upgrade, replacement of windows, and storm windows on the front stained glass windows. Cost estimates total $29,912. Mayfield said he applied for a grant with the city providing a 10 percent match or $2,991 for the project. The grant awards will be made in December.

The commission also signed a cooperative agreement with Kansas State University-Kansas Forest Service. The five-year agreement will allow the Marion Fire Department to receive grants from the forest service.

In other business:

— The commission approved the June utility billing tie-out.

— Mayfield reported baseball boosters will paint the trim at the concession stand at the baseball complex. The boosters also will provide the paint.

— Warrants in the amount of $103,001 and payroll in the amount of $26,475 were approved. The excessive amount of warrants was due to an electrical payment to Westar Energy in the amount of $74,668.

— Sanders presented a written report. City crews spent this past week cleaning up following high winds that caused damage to trees. Sanders said there was one electrical pole broken due to a tree limb falling on it. Two service lines were pulled from residences and two switches were replaced at the city water plant.

The airport project has been inspected, Sanders said. Crews also worked on a transformer at Marion Assisted Living facility, provided vehicle maintenance, and shop inventory.

— Mayfield reported he will be attending a class in Chanute this week for instruction on accessing a website to list available retail business and land.

The commission will meet at 4 p.m. Monday in the commission room.
