City fixes water leak, approves fireworks ordinance

A large leak in Marion City Pool a couple days prior to opening day kept the city crew busy, Harvey Sanders, director of public utilities, told Marion City Commission June 1.

"We had to empty half the pool to get it fixed," Sanders said.

Water was leaking through a main circuit line in a six-inch pipe. "There was a crack in the middle of a plastic 'T'," he said.

Sanders said they discovered the leak because it was "right next to a sump pump" and water was "going right into the pump."

"We're confident the leak is fixed — for now," Sanders said.

Fireworks approved

Besides hearing from Sanders, city commission approved a fireworks ordinance allowing the sale and discharge of fireworks in Marion for the 4th of July holiday. The ordinance can be found in the public notice section of this issue.

Commissioners also approved modification of two related lease agreements between the City of Marion and Central National Bank and the City of Marion and Straub International.

City administrator Dave Mayfield said "due to various reasons," the city and Central National Bank had agreed to lower the interest component of rental payment.

Mayfield's recommendation was approved 2-0 by commissioner Jim Crofoot and mayor Martin Tice. Commissioner Larry McLain was not in attendance.

In other matters:

— Commission approved warrants amounting to $45,384.06 and payroll amounting to $26,483.01.

— Mayfield said he had been accepted to a class sponsored by the Kansas Economic Development Alliance (KEDA).
