CJHS football team trounces St. Xavier

Thursday's game against St. Xavier, Junction City, was like a good practice for the Centre Junior High School football team. They won the game, 72-22.

The outcome already was evident at the end of the first quarter, as Centre led 44-16.

The first touchdown was the result of a fumble recovery by Casey Kristek in the end zone. A.J. Temel ran for the two-point conversion.

Five more touchdowns — two each by Tanner Brunner and Rustyn Kerbs and one by Jesse Kopietz — four extra points, and a team safety provided another 36 points.

St. Xavier scored two touchdowns and two PATs for 16 points.

Kerbs and Jacob Jirak each scored touchdowns before the half. Kristek ran for two extra points. St. Xavier scored a touchdown, resulting in a 66-22 lead for the Cougars.

Due to the 45-point rule, the game ended at 7:49 in the third quarter after Mikael Antoszyk scored on a 25-yard run.

Seven Centre players provided a total of 10 carries for 150 yards. St. Xavier had 23 carries for 178 yards. Kerbs caught a pass from Temel for 27 yards, and Burhoop caught one from Tyler Klenda for 35 yards.

Kerbs led rushing with 38 yards, followed by Brunner with 36 and Antoszyk with 25.

Kordell Harding had one interception, and Klenda and Kristek each recovered a fumble.

Chris Craft led the defense with three solo and two assisted tackles.
