CJHS teams claim victories

Basketball teams from Centre Junior High School are competing this week in the league tournament at Manhattan.

The first round was Saturday. Both teams played St. Xavier teams. The girls won, 39-24, and the boys won, 46-17.

The second round will be played Thursday, the boys against Wakefield at 4 p.m. and the girls against Luckey at 7 p.m. The final rounds will be Saturday.

Girls

In the opening girls' game, Leann Pankratz led scoring with 14 points. Danielle Tajchman and Josie Peterson scored six points each, Shelby Deines and Carlye Simons four points each, and Kirsten Johnson three.

The teams were tied at 8-all at the end of the first quarter, but Centre pulled ahead to lead by eight at halftime. They scored 10 points in each of the final two quarters compared to 10 and three by St. Xavier for the 15-point win.

Boys

The boys had an easy time defeating St. Xavier. They led 12-4 at the end of the first quarter and 26-10 at halftime. A poor six-point third quarter bested St. Xavier's four points, and a 14-3 advantage in the fourth quarter gave Centre the 29-point win.

James Weber had an outstanding game with 21 points. Ben Krause scored seven points, Konley Harding six, Jared Diepenbrock five, Kacey Hanschu four, and Josh Olsen three.

Both teams played St. Xavier at Junction City Thursday in the last regular games of the season.

The boys took home a lopsided 71-37 win. Four players scored in double digits: Krause 20, Weber 18, Harding 12, and Diepenbrock 11.

The girls won, 37-27. Simons was leading scorer with 12 points.
