CJHS varsity girls win, boys lose to Luckey
In games played Thursday at Centre High School, the junior high varsity girls defeated Luckey of Manhattan, 24-10. The boys' varsity was defeated, 32-53.
The Lady Cougars outscored Luckey, 6-0 and 10-2, in the first two quarters to take a 16-2 halftime lead. Both teams scored four points in each of the final two quarters, resulting in a 14-point win for Centre.
Sammi Seifert and Shelby Deines led scoring for Centre with six points each. Allison Shields, Carlye Simons, and Josie Peterson scored four points each.
The girls' junior varsity lost a close one, 20-21. The game was tied, 8-8, at halftime, but a third-quarter 9-8 advantage for Luckey gave them the victory.
Seven Centre players contributed points, including Ripley Howard, Tori Schill, and Shields four each, Dallas Rosenow three, DJ Chavers and Amanda Floyd two each, and Katie Remy one.
The Cougar boys were down by one, 9-8, after the first quarter of the varsity game. But a 12-4 point advantage for Luckey in the second quarter gave Luckey a big halftime lead.
They continued to outscore Centre, 10-6 and 22-14, in the second half for an easy win.
Jared Diepenbrock led scoring for the Cougars with 19 points including five from three-point range.
Brian Burhoop scored five points, and A.J. Temel and Trevor Troutt scored four points each.
The junior varsity defeated Luckey, 31-23. They were down by one, 15-14, at halftime but outscored Luckey in the second half 17-8 to win the game.
Rustyn Kerbs was Centre's high-point man, with nine points. Jacob Jennings and Stephen Kaiser scored four points each, and Cole Svoboda, Casey Kristek, Zach Antoszyk, Jacob Jirak, Tyler Klenda, Benjamin Wirtz, and Ben Baker added two points each.
