Communities in Schools receives new grant funds

Communities in Schools of Marion County, Inc., recently received nearly $150,000 in grant funds, slightly more than received in 2004.

The office of National Drug Control Policy announced Marion County will receive a $94,481 Drug-Free Communities matching grant for the program.

"This is a great way for prevention efforts in Marion County," said Linda Ogden, executive director of CIS. "The Drug-Free Communities Program and other drug prevention efforts are important elements of a balanced national drug control strategy. Key partners involved in CIS of Marion County are doing crucial prevention work in our community and continuation of federal support will help us expand our efforts and reach more of our county's children."

In addition to federal funds, CIS also was awarded $54,030 in state funds as recipients of the governor's discretionary portion of the federal Safe and Drug-Free Schools and Communities Act grant program.

Ogden said funds can be utilized now through Sept. 30, 2006.

"Both grants are on a reimbursement basis," Ogden said. Purchases and expenses are paid and CIS receives reimbursement from the grant programs.

"Local support provides the matching portion of the grants," Ogden said. Federal funds require a dollar-for-dollar match which can be monetary or in-kind.

Even though this is the third year for receiving these grants, Ogden said the grant programs could be cut.

"Both are at risk for future years," said Ogden. "Availability of funds is dependent on congress and state legislators."

The majority of the funds will be used for programs and expenses as a result of the programs. A small percentage will be used for administrative costs, said Ogden.
