Conservation cost share programs are available; sign up by June 27 years ago

Marion County Conservation District announces a new sigh up period for water resources and non point source cost share practices. Both programs are funded through the State Conservation Commission and are administered by the Marion County Conservation District. The water resources program promotes soil and water conservation while non point source focuses on water quality protection practices. The sign up began Monday and runs through June 27, with funding being available in July for those practices whose rankings identify them as natural resource priorities.

Water resources provides cost-share assistance to landowners for several conservation practices, including terraces, diversions, grass waterways (new or restoration), and grass seedlings. The non point source program offers financial assistance for pollution control measures, such as abandoned well plugging, upgrading failing septic systems, and livestock waste management practices. Both programs offer opportunities for landowners to implement new projects without bearing the entire financial burden.

Landowners interested in water resources or non point source cost share practices should contact the Marion County Conservation District at 303 Eisenhower Drive, Marion, or phone (620) 382-3520. All applications will be ranked according to pre-set criteria, determining which practices offer the greatest benefit to the county. New fiscal year funding will be available for accepted cost-share practices beginning in July.

Additional funds are available in the following river basins through the TMDL funding: Lower Ark (Sand Creek area), Walnut (Whitewater River area), Smoky Hill Saline (Turkey and Lyons Creek areas) and Neosho (Marion Reservoir drainage area).

County fireworks prohibition ends

Fireworks can be sold and discharged in Marion County.

Marion County Commission approved a resolution Monday that permits the sale of fireworks in the county from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. June 27 through July 6. Retail businesses must obtain permits from Marion County Clerk.

The resolution also allows landowners to discharge fireworks on their property from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. July 1-4 each year, without a permit.

County commissioner Randy Dallke had asked the commission to consider a resolution a few weeks ago and had worked with county attorney Susan Robson and county clerk Carol Maggard to develop it.
