Construction begins at Florence roundabout

Kansas Department of Transportation recently announced construction of a roundabout at the intersection of U.S.-77/50 at Florence has begun.

The roundabout will allow traffic to pass through the intersection at a reduced speed without stopping.

Benefits of the roundabout include less congestion, fewer collisions and severe injuries that result from collisions, and increase in traffic capacity.

In addition to safety improvements, roundabouts are less expensive to construct and maintain than a signalized intersection.

Construction will connect the two highways and 120th/Eighth Street at Florence. Traffic will be carried through the work zone at 45 mph on "shoefly" detours.

Construction is scheduled to be completed by early October.

LaFarge North American, Inc. of Fort Collins, Colo., is the prime contractor. The project cost is $2,968,612.
