Sunflower Road is ready for construction.

Marion County Public Works Director Martin Rhodes reported Monday to Marion County Commission that county crews had prepared the road.

Construction is to begin Oct. 24.

In other business:

— Marion County Deputy Register of Deeds Jo Ottensmeier received official word from Governor Kathleen Sebelius, via the commission, that she officially is the register of deeds.

Longtime registrar Faye Makovec retired Sept. 28, leaving the elected office vacant. The Marion County Republican Nominating Committee met and nominated Ottensmeier to fill the position. She could not officially take the office until the governor approved the nomination.

— The county will split the cost of a six-foot high, 125-foot long, cedar fence at the Joe Nowak residence at Pilsen.

County crews will remove the remaining cedar trees. Three bids will be obtained for the fence.

— Rhodes told the commission that he had obtained a bid for two garage doors at the county's shop at Pilsen. The commission instructed him to obtain two more bids which is the county policy for any purchase more than $500.

— Markley Service was the low bidder of chemicals for the noxious weed department for a total of $2,921 for 180 gallons of 2,4-D Amine, 30 gallons of Pathway, and 10 gallons of Crossbow.

— County road supervisor John Summerville asked if the county was still using sand on roads. Because of fuel costs and having to drive a distance to pickup the sand, the county had curtailed the hauling and using of sand.

Commissioner Dan Holub suggested haulers be hired to bring sand to the county when they come for loads of rock at area quarries.

Sand was used on rock roads to make the rock last longer and control dust.

Commissioner Bob Hein said Harvey County uses a lot of sand and agreed with Holub.

— One sealed bid was opened regarding the disposal of a wooden shed at Marion County Lake. The commission approved the bid for $10 from Mark Tajchman.

A deadline will be set regarding removal.

— A cost estimate from Elcon Electric was tabled until commission chairman Randy Dallke is in attendance. The estimate was for new lighting around the courthouse.

County clerk Carol Maggard said landscaping would not be done this fall but in the spring. Irrigation systems for the lawn will be checked as will a drip system. Water will be used from a well, located on the courthouse property.

— Rhodes requested and received a 15-minute executive session to discuss personnel. The meeting reconvened with no decisions.

The next commission meeting is at 9 a.m. Monday at the courthouse.
