Contest would benefit Marion

Isn't it amazing how "great thoughts" run in the same channel? For a long time I have tried to come up with some idea to promote Marion.

So good to hear that the Chingawassa committee has one — "rhinos" — a cute idea. How about "Rhinestone Cowboy?"

I finally came up with something. Marion is named for General Francis Marion. I always have thought we should have a wonderful statue like the one of General McPherson in McPherson.

In place of that I dreamed up huge rocks placed around town with a replica of a beautiful red fox sitting on them. You see Francis Marion was known as the "Swamp Fox." How about a contest of ideas?

Have you ever been depressed? My worst time of day is from 5 to 7 p.m. I can see why the cocktail hour is so popular.

In her book, Dorothy Parker, a long ago writer, wrote "If you can get through the twilight hour you can make it through the night." I know the feeling.

I have just seen the new movie "The Aviator." It is the story of Howard Hughes. He lived before, during, and after World War II, a designer of airplanes and a producer of movies. Several well-known movie stars are depicted in the movie.

Howard Hughes turned into an anti-germ fanatic. He is known for the huge plane, "The Spruce Goose" which he constructed. It did fly but not well enough and is now on display in California. The movie is not a happy one but interesting and well done and up for an Oscar award.
