Corn stove business at Burns is booming

If area residents are thinking about purchasing a corn stove from Goodwin Enterprises, forget it. They're sold out.

Ron Goodwin of Goodwin Enterprises of Burns, said he has been sold out of the corn burning stoves for a while.

"I get a semi truck load each year," Goodwin said, "and I'm already sold out."

Goodwin said he can't get any more until spring.

He explained that eastern states rely on heating oil which is refined in the southern states that recently were hit by two hurricanes.

"Stoves are being shipped there because people need them as a primary heat, not to save money," Goodwin said.

Corn stoves have become popular in areas where corn is plentiful. Surprisingly, New York and New Jersey have about as much corn as Kansas, Goodwin said.

The popular corn or wood pellet heating stoves should be used with regular heating units, and not as the only source of heat.

For those thinking ahead, an order should be placed with Goodwin Enterprises by the end of March or first of April.
