Cougars devour Lions

Centre Junior High School boys' basketball team took it to the Hope Lions Monday at home and won handily, 59-27.

The aggressive Cougars overpowered the Lions to take a first-quarter 12-6 lead with field goals by A.J. Temel, Tyler Klenda, and Brian Burhoop. Klenda also completed two free throws.

Burhoop nailed a three and Jesse Kopietz and Klenda fielded two-point goals in the second quarter, and Centre led 20-12 at halftime.

An explosive third quarter saw field goals by Cole Svoboda, Temel, Rustyn Kerbs, Klenda, and Tanner Brunner. They compiled 18 points compared to eight by Hope.

Casey Kristek and Kordell Harding joined the pack of scorers in the fourth quarter as the Cougars added another 21 points for an impressive 32-point victory.

Klenda led scoring with 14 points, followed by Temel with 10.

The B team lost an exciting game to Hope by two points, 29-31. Centre led 7-5 at the end of the first quarter, but ended up dry in the second compared to Hope's 17, giving Hope a 22-7 lead at halftime.

Things were reversed in the third quarter as the Cougars outscored the Lions, 16-0, to take a 23-22 lead. But Hope outscored Centre 9-6 in the final quarter to win the game.

Nine Cougars contributed points. They were: Kristek and Jacob Jirak six each, Ben Baker four, Harding three, and Mikael Antoszyk, Svoboda, Kopietz, Brandon Temel, and Trevor Hageberg two each.

The Cougars play again Nov. 30 at Manhattan Luckey.
