The Centre High School football team is still looking for its first win after being defeated Friday on the road by Wakefield, 36-28.

"It was a tough game to lose," Coach Kelly Steiner said. "We gave up too many big plays."

Bryant Brunner scored the first touchdown of the game on a 16-yard pass from quarterback Ben Krause. The extra-point attempt failed.

Wakefield also scored in the first quarter and ran for the two-point conversion to lead 8-6.

Brunner scored two consecutive touchdowns and Krause ran for two extra points in the second quarter to give Centre a 20-8 lead. Wakefield came back with eight more points of their own, but trailed by four, 16-20, at halftime.

The Bombers exploded for two touchdowns after the game resumed, giving them a 28-20 lead at the end of three.

The Cougars found the end zone again at 8:52 in the fourth quarter, on a five-yard run by Brunner. Zach Slayden added two extra points on a pass from Krause. The game was tied, 28-28.

But the Cougars couldn't hold back the Bombers, and Wakefield scored a final touchdown and two extra points to win the game, 36-28.

Brunner was leading rusher with 17 carries for 93 yards. He also caught five passes for 91 yards. Krause threw nine completed passes on 27 attempts, for 170 yards, and had one interception.

The team had 12 penalties for a loss of 56 yards, and recovered four of five fumbles.

"We had too many penalties and turnovers," Coach Steiner said. "We need to work on better tackling and fundamentals. We will have to play better against White City to win."

The game will be played at 7 p.m. Friday at home.
