Cougars get second win

Centre High School football team racked up its second win of the season Friday by defeating White City on the road, 38-28.

The Cougars got off to a slow start, failing to score in the first quarter. The Huskies scored their first touchdown with 20 seconds remaining in the quarter. After a kick for an extra point, White City led 7-0.

In the second quarter, Seth Jirak crossed the goal line on a 5-yard run and ran for the extra points, to put Centre on the board.

Quarterback Thieen Antoszyk scored the second Cougar touchdown and Jirak provided the two-point conversion. White City failed to score, resulting in a 16-7 Centre lead at halftime.

The third quarter belonged to the Huskies. They scored two touchdowns and two extra points to lead 21-16.

The Cougars answered with a strong showing in the fourth quarter. Jirak scored two touchdowns, one on a 28-yard run, the other on a 7-yard run. Alfonse Klenda ran 28 yards on a fumble return to add another touchdown. Lance Diepenbrock and Jirak completed PATs, and Centre led, 38-21.

With two minutes remaining in the game, White City scored another seven points but trailed by 10 points when the final horn sounded.

Centre led in rushing with 48 carries for 279 yards, including 233 compiled by Jirak and Antoszyk. White City had 27 carries for 177 yards, but compiled an impressive 229 yards in the air compared to 108 yards by Centre's Antoszyk. Antoszyk also intercepted a pass for 40 yards. Kevin Mueller had four receptions for 77 yards.

Coach Kelly Steiner was pleased with the win but said the boys could have played better.

"White City was a very good team," he said. "We are going to have to play better this Friday."

The team will face arch-rival Hope on the road.
