Cougars win over White City in last league game

It was a good ending to a lackluster regular season in the Eisenhower League as the Centre High School Cougars defeated White City Feb. 14 on the road.

The 67-54 victory improved their record to 7-12 heading into the regional tournament at Burrton.

The team lost Feb. 7 to Solomon, 75-54, at home and defeated St. Xavier, 60-53, Feb. 10 at Junction City.

Kevin Mueller and Seth Jirak opened the game at White City with a couple of buckets, and Jirak added a free throw to give the Cougars a 5-0 start.

White City followed with five points of their own to tie the game. It was tied two more times in the first quarter, but Centre led 17-14 when Dustin Burnett made a basket as time ran out.

From then on, the Cougars were in control. They opened the second quarter with an 11-point run on scoring by Tad Remy, Burnett, and Bryant Gutch, increasing their lead to 14.

The Huskies didn't stand a chance as they attempted to come back but didn't get very far. The game ended in a 13-point win for the Cougars.

Burnett led at the boards with 10 rebounds and 25 points. Remy also scored in double digits with 10 points. Gutsch provided five assists.

The Cougars traveled Friday to Cottonwood Falls to play 2A Chase County. They were defeated, 59-62, in overtime.

Centre scored 20 points in the first half compared to 39 by Chase County. The tables were turned in the second half as Centre scored 33 points compared to 14 by Chase County, resulting in a 53-53 tie.

Chase County outscored Centre 9-6 in overtime to hand the Cougars a disappointing three-point loss.

Gutsch was Centre's leading scorer with 17 points, followed by Burnett with 14. Burnett also provided five assists.

Alfonse Klenda and James Weber led in rebounds with six each, and Thieen Antoszyk stole the ball seven times.
