Council approves pay increase for employees

Marion City Council followed through with an across the board cost of living adjustment increase for all full-time city employees.

During Tuesday's council meeting, city administrator David Mayfield reported all employee evaluations had been completed and recommended the council approve the budgeted 4.1 percent COLA for all full-time workers.

Mayor Martin Tice said the 2007 budget was prepared in July 2006, and the COLA was an estimate based on information from the previous year.

Councilman Stacey Collett asked for a list of salary increases for each city employee. One was not available.

Gene Winkler made the motion, Gerry Kline seconded, and the motion passed, 4-1, with Bill Holdeman voting against.

At the conclusion of the meeting, Tice called for a 20-minute executive session to discuss personnel that included Mayfield and city attorney Dan Baldwin. Following the 20-minute session, economic development director Jami Williams was included in the session for another 20 minutes.

When the meeting reconvened, Tice announced "there was no action at this point and the matter will be brought up at a later time."

At the previous council meeting Dec. 26, the council completed performance evaluations for Mayfield, Williams, police chief Michel Soyez, and clerk Angela Lange. At the conclusion of the executive session, the council approved a 4.1 percent COLA increase for the four employees who were evaluated and made the economic development position an appointed position instead of a contracted position.

A complete story about other council decisions and discussions will be in next week's Marion County Record.
