County asks residents to respond to alcohol sales

Public input is being sought by Marion County Commission regarding Sunday alcohol sales.

Warren Kreutziger of Canada Bait & Tackle previously had requested the commission consider a resolution that would allow businesses located in unincorporated areas within the county to sell alcohol on Sundays.

Marion County Attorney Susan Robson presented information Thursday to the commission regarding options of allowing Sunday sales for all alcoholic spirits which would include retail sale of beer and "hard liquor."

The resolution, if adopted by the commission, would be published one time in the county's official newspaper but would not become effective until after Nov. 15 or 60 days, whichever comes first.

Commissioner Dan Holub suggested the commission wait until its next meeting to discuss and make decisions.

The topic is scheduled to be discussed at 11 a.m. Monday in the courthouse.

In other attorney business:

— Robson reported the county could sell or give tax sale properties located within city limits to the appropriate cities for development. She said it would require a unanimous vote from the commission and a public hearing.

If cities don't want particular parcels, the county would retain those.

Commissioner Randy Dallke previously had instructed Robson to research the issue because he knows there are some properties cities would like to acquire in order to remove dilapidated structures and allow new development.

— The commission instructed Robson to purchase a $144 per year maintenance contract on a newer fax machine. The machine had an expired warranty and was in need of repair. Costs to repair the machine would be $193 for mileage and first 30 minutes, plus $15 for each 15 minutes after that.
