County attorney justifies opinion

In last week's Marion County Record, an editorial from Richard Gannon, editor of "The Liberty Sentinel," a publication that focuses on Kansas open government, criticized Marion County Attorney Susan Robson for the way she investigated a complaint of an open meetings violation by the City of Marion.

Robson responded that the League of Kansas Municipalities was not the only agency that was contacted.

The first agency she contacts on such matters is the County Counselor's Association. E-mails were sent to other members who are county attorneys and asked their opinions about the matter.

"They gave me their opinions of their take on statutes," Robson said "I made my decision after doing the research."

In the editorial, the League was accused of being partial to its paying member, the City of Marion. Robson commented that Marion County also is a member of the organization.

"Taxpayers need to know that the League is not going to say what I want to hear," Robson said.

When asked if this was her typical procedure, Robson responded it was. So, when does she contact the Kansas Attorney General's office for opinions?

"I consult the AG office on criminal matters and the League for civil matters," Robson said. "I never contact the AG office for civil matters."
