Staff reporter

Following a five-minute executive session to discuss personnel, a job offer will be made to an applicant for the position of economic development secretary.

Marion County Commission made the announcement Monday that a candidate had been selected from several applicants. No further information will be available until the individual has accepted the position.

In other business:

— County clerk Carol Maggard will pursue more information regarding a prescription drug card for Marion County residents that could provide a discount in medications.

Currently, neighboring counties of Harvey, Butler, Reno, Sedgwick, and Saline offer the discount card to residents through National Association of Counties and Care Mark.

— Cindy Magill, county appraiser, reported she had received more than 100 applications for the county's neighborhood revitalization program. Most are for construction of houses but some were for agriculture and accessory buildings.

The commission suggested a small flyer with information about the county's requirements for building permits, zoning regulations, and the property tax rebate program be enclosed with property valuation information.

— The commission approved a five-year contract with SBC/AT&T for the courthouse and auxiliary buildings phone system. With updates and upgrades, the county will save nearly half of previous expenses.

— James Assink has been hired as personal property coordinator in the appraiser's office.

— The commission signed a contract to increase the administrative fee for the county's microloan program.

— Maggard reported the county's new computer system will be installed by Oct. 14.

— By memo, county attorney Susan Robson informed the commission that Douglas P. Jones has been appointed as special prosecutor for an upcoming case.

— Rollin Schmidt, transfer station manager, reported there was 581 tons of refuse transported from the station in September.

— One bid was submitted for the purchase of a 1997 Chevrolet Lumina that was used by the sanitation director. The commission decided to keep the vehicle for the economic development secretary.

The next commission meeting is at 9 a.m. Monday at the courthouse.
