What's a truck driver to do when his trailer won't fit in the roundabout at Florence?
Marion County Commission Chairman Randy Dallke voiced his concerns at the Dec. 31 meeting about those trucks and the drivers having to use county roads to travel through the county.
Drivers have been using 150th and Sunflower roads as an alternate route because of the limited access of the roundabout.
Acting county public works director John Summerville said companies are required to obtain permits from him to use the county roads but he wasn't sure how to regulate.
Commissioner Dan Holub said the county had a similar problem when U.S.-77 was being reconstructed.
"Should we instruct the sheriff to give citations when truck drivers are using county roads without permits?" Dallke asked.
Discussion was heard regarding requiring contact being made with a county official when a driver needs to use a county road because his/her trailer cannot fit on the roundabout. Road and bridge personnel then can assess damages to the appropriate companies.
County clerk Carol Maggard said a housing manufacturer contacts her office when a house is being moved through the county.
In other business:
— The KWORK premium for 2008 worker's compensation is $134,962, a $15,000 increase from the previous year.
— The purchase of skid steer tires was approved from Setco for $3,778 for four tires.
— Cardie Oil Company of Tampa had the low fuel bids of $19,564 for 6,550 gallons of diesel fuel. Cooperative Grain & Supply of Hillsboro presented a bid of $19,878 for the same.
— Encumbrances from county departments were approved. These funds were budgeted in 2007 and not spent. By encumbering them in the 2008 budget, departments then can use those funds.
The encumbrances included: $15,000 from emergency management department and $15,000 from communications for one vehicle; $10,000, generator, communications.
Clerk: $8,000 copier, $2,000, computer, and $500 for two office chairs.
Treasurer: $2,500 printer, $2,400 six chairs and information display center, $4,670 computer software program.
Judicial: $5,000 computer software, construction of a public access computer, and computer at judge's bench.
Appraiser: $700 for electronic measuring device.
Park: $2,500 fish, $11,000 electrical outlets for new camping sites.
Risk management: $18,008 WRAPS.
— Holub suggested a work session to discuss road and bridge issues be scheduled. A session was set for 1 p.m. Jan. 22.
— Holub requested and received a five-minute executive session to discuss personnel with Summerville and Maggard. The meeting reconvened with no decisions.
— Discussion of cabins at the lake will be at 1 p.m. Jan. 28.
