County fair begins Aug. 4

The Marion County Fair officially opens Aug. 4 at the fairgrounds in Hillsboro with the theme of "Let the Good Times Soar."

Festivities will begin with a parade at 6:30 p.m. downtown Hillsboro. At 8 p.m. Aug. 4 and 5, the Kraft Rodeo, based in Abbyville, will be held in the fairgrounds arena. In addition to traditional events for adults, the itinerary will include muttin-bustin', mini-bull riding, and a calf scramble for children 10 and under.

On Aug. 6, the third annual Women's Ranch Rodeo will be held at 7:15 p.m. in the arena. As many as 10 four-women teams will compete in four ranch events — calf branding, team sorting, trailer loading, and calf doctoring. Admission is $2 of adults and children 12 and under can get in free.

The climax of the fair will be Aug. 7 when the annual demolition derby takes place. The largest attraction of the fair, the event will begin at 7 p.m. in the arena. Admission is $8 for adults and $6 for children ages six to 12. Children five and under can get in free.

Each night of the fair, Cole's Rainbow Amusements will have carnival rides and games available. Concession and food vendors also will be available.

Displays of various 4-H, craft, and commercial exhibits will be available.
