County health fair to offer testing, screening

"Building Healthy Communities" is the theme for the 2005 Marion County Health Fair.

St. Luke Hospital and Hillsboro Community Medical Center are co-hosting the event which will begin at 8 a.m. March 12 at Marion Elementary School.

Various screening and testing will be available at nominal charges and booths with health information also will be available during the fair.

Blood chemistry panel

A blood chemistry lab will be offered for $25. Insurance companies will not be billed.

Comprehensive metabolic panel and lipid panel testing will be provided which includes glucose, kidney function tests, electrolytes, cholesterol, triglyceride, and HDL.

For accurate results, attendees who plan to have the testing should fast 12-14 hours prior to having blood drawn.

Snacks will be available in Marion Family Physicians, Inc., booth after the lab.

Prostate screenings also will be available at the health fair at a cost of $20.

Dr. Wilmar Rodriquez of St. Luke Hospital & Living Center Specialty Clinic, and Dr. Valentin Tandoc of Hillsboro Community Medical Center Specialty Clinic, will conduct the screening.

The screening consists of a blood test and digital rectal exam. The combination of these two tests is the most effective and efficient method for detecting prostate cancer at an early and potentially curable stage.

Blood must be drawn prior to the health fair. Appointments for an exam and blood draw can be made with Dr. Rodriquez at (620) 382-2177 and Dr. Tandoc at (620) 947-3114.

The physicians are donating their time for the exams.
