County maintains driver's license office

Marion County Treasurer Jeannine Bateman was among 37 Kansas county treasurers who attended a news conference May 4 in Topeka.

At the news conference, Congressman Jerry Moran announced that Kansas county treasurers will continue to process driver's license renewals in rural areas. Proposed federal regulations will allow the county offices to administer the service as long as specific security standards are followed.

A staggering 81,000 petitions from Kansas residents who opposed the removal of this service from county offices were presented to Moran. More than 3,000 signatures were collected from Marion County.

The REAL ID Act sets uniform security features for licenses and requires states to verify the identities of applicants. The act will become effective in May 2008.
