County moves forward on vacating road

Staff reporter

Liability concerns are prompting Marion County Commission to vacate a half mile of road on 70th, west of Sunflower Road.

Marion County Attorney Susan Robson advised acting county public works director John Summerville and the commission to vacate the road because of unsafe conditions. A gate is on the roadway which prohibits public access.

Two county bridges are located on the road and officials are not pleased that the county has been paying for the inspections of those bridges even though they're basically not being used by the public.

Commission chairman Randy Dallke said he talked with the landowner of a part of the property who was in agreement to have a bridge removed and replaced with a culvert.

County clerk Carol Maggard was instructed to begin the necessary paperwork and planning to have the road vacated.

Dallke reiterated that he wanted the county to reserve the right to have an easement or use of a right-of-way on the property.

— Summerville reported that he had contacted a surveyor regarding Daniel King's property at 1202 120th Road, Peabody, regarding King's claim that the road had been moved which affected his property.

Summerville said during a recent visit to the location he noticed a surveyor's stake in a ditch which should not have been removed. Commissioner Dan Holub and Summerville concurred that culverts remain on the road which makes it doubtful that the road has been changed and affecting King's property.

King was given a 30-day time frame to erect 500 feet of fence and have posts set for the remaining fence line as part of a conditional use permit for his salvage operation. If King does not meet the deadline, the commission will no longer make any concessions and the permit will be revoked.

— Cooperative Grain and Supply of Hillsboro and Cardie Oil Company of Tampa each were awarded two area fuel bids.

Cardie had the low bids of $3.066 per gallon for 800 gallons and 2,150 gallons of diesel fuel at two locations for a total of $9,045.

Cooperative Grain and Supply presented a bid of $3.0571 and $3.0621 per gallon for 1,800 gallons each at two locations for a total of $11,015.
